Unlike pistol powders of the past, powder position in large cases (45 Colt, 357 Magnum and others) has virtually no effect on velocity and performance. Cowboy Action, Bullseye and Combat Shooters should love this one! Titegroup has it all – low charge weight, burns clean, mild muzzle report and superb, uniform ballistics. Guys, this is part II of the Factory/Handload review that I promised. Reviewed are the Hornady, Sierra, and Remington 200 grain roundnose softpoints, the 180 and 220 grain Speer softpoints, the RCBS 200 FN, cast of wheelweights in both as cast and hardened conditions, the 180 Hornady Single Shot Pistol bullet, the 225 Nosler Ballistic Tip (for the handgun shooters out there) and the Hornady ...
I ordered a box of 100 .308-caliber 180-grain Scirocco IIs, and headed to the bench. I had developed a load for this particular rifle that gave just under minute-of-angle accuracy, so decided to start there (it was well below maximum), and see what the new bullets would do. The load is something around 68.5 grains with either a 180-grain or a 190-grain Sierra Matchking. A friend of mine loaded this charge of IMR 4350 with the 180-grain Ballistic Tip and reported one-hole groups at 200 metres -- more than good enough for any deer hunting at any reasonable range. The velocity hovers between about 2,900 and 2,925. 308 Winchester (7.62 NATO) COMPARE. 308B | Bronze Line | 147 Grain | 2780 FPS MV ... Aug 14, 2006 · Is there a powder that is versatile for reloading .303 British, 7.92x57mm Mauser and .308 Win? I want to load the 7.92x57mm Mauser to European pressures with 196-200 gr. bullets. It would mainly be a hunting load. The .303 British would be loaded with 174 gr. FMJ/BT s and 180 gr. SP s. It would be for plinking and possibly hunting. For reference I will be using Varget and Hornady ELD match 168 grain bullets. My question is two fold: Lyman recommends starting at 41 grains for a little shy of 2500 fps. Hornady doesn't recommend a starting load, but it seems like there isn't any advantage to downloading the rounds at 2100-2400 fps in the Hornady manual other than saving powder. The .308 has just about 50 grains of powder space. The .300 Remington Ultra Magnum has about 100 grains. Does the .300 send 180-grain bullets out the muzzle at twice the speed of the .308? No, it only achieves about 25 percent more velocity. Much of the extra powder is released at the muzzle in the form of fast, loud gas, adding a lot to recoil. The big difference is case length, with the .308 being 0.479 inch or nearly a half inch shorter. The resultant reduction in powder capacity leaves the .308 pushing same-size bullets 100 to 200 fps slower. While it can handle 180-grain projectiles, 150-grain bullets are optimal.
